About Gorilla Safari

Trekking up a large mountainside in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, or Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is one of the most iconic Gorilla Safaris experiences for safari-goers and nature lovers.

Are you a solo traveler, a couple, a family, on honeymoon, or a big group looking to bond in nature? A safari to Uganda or Rwanda to see the Mountain Gorillas—Africa’s largest primate—will be worth it as the Gorilla Trek experience will more than live up to its high billing.

In terms of gorilla tracking or trekking, visitors can choose to either go for the classic Gorilla Trek or the Gorilla Habituation Experience.

With the classic Gorilla Trek, visitors are allowed one hour in the presence of the gentle giants once they have trekked up to the specific gorilla family or group they have been allocated.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience, on the other hand, allows guests to spend four hours in the presence of one of the two gorilla families or groups that visitors can track on a habituation experience in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Frequently Asked Questions

These Great Apes live in three countries spanning four national parks – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the DR Congo.
In both Uganda and Rwanda, the chances of seeing the majestic mountain gorillas are excellent, whichever destination you choose. In terms of the trek, conditions tend to be a bit easier in Rwanda than Uganda. This is not absolute though. Conditions change daily depending on the location of the gorilla family/ group that you will be allocated.
Our Uganda and Rwanda mountain gorilla treks are off-track with no clear path or walkways and its largely steep terrain. They can last up to 6 hours and so a good degree of fitness is required. On the ground in Bwindi or Volcanoes, a porter will be happy to assist you where necessary.
Yes. This is one of our popular gorilla safaris.
We recommend booking gorilla and chimpanzee permits 3-6 months in advance, especially if you intend to travel during the dry months (June, July, August, December, January and February).
The cost in Rwanda is higher than in Uganda largely on account of the price of the gorilla permit in Rwanda and as such, the gorilla safari tour will be priced highly than is the case in Uganda.
